Have you every noticed those two shields blocking the seats surrounding the back door?
Well, I was riding the bus one day and this great guy who is a regular told me he used to be a bus driver in Los Angeles back in the day. He said there was a high rate of people appearing to be waiting for their stop and as soon as the back door was unlocked they would snatch another passengers belongings and take off. These shields were added in response to the thefts.
I don't know how factual his story is, but I like to think those shields are in place for some sort of good reason, like protecting the passengers. Which brings to mind the recent consideration of putting in shields protecting the drivers.
In my opinion, a drivers shield seems a bit detached and creates the idea that the shield is necessary, even if it hasn't been proven so. In a city like Santa Cruz,I like to think a driver's shield would not be essential to the safe goings-on of METRO transit drivers. But with the rising rates of gang violence and drug use, you just really never know.
I would love to hear what you think?
