Annual Flower Planting Day at the Fairgrounds

Community volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves, a gardening tool and friends and family to help beautify the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds Thursday from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Those 105 flowered-filled acres don't plant themselves. It's the dirt-covered hands and dedication of volunteer gardeners who turn the scenery into a fragrant backdrop for the Santa Cruz County Fair, held here each September.

Tomorrow, any community member interested in planting flowers at the fairgrounds will have the chance to do so during the Annual Flower Planting Day. Not only is it a great opportunity to get outdoors, according to Steve Stagnaro, director of marketing for the fair, the pay-off is well worth it.

"One of the pleasures of planting is to walk by the beds you planted in mid-July during the fair," he said. "It feels good to know your handiwork did that and caused so much beauty that other people are able to enjoy."

Stagnaro said between 30 and 50 people, some representing groups like the 4-H Club, typically come to plant. While green thumbs tend to turn out, many non-gardeners relish the chance to dress up the fairgrounds.

"A lot of individuals like to come do this as their way of contributing to the fair each year," he said. "They like to pitch a hand...or a shovel in this case."

Flowers are planted as seedlings, ensuring they'll be in full bloom by the first day of the fair. Local grower Cavanaugh Color in Watsonville supplies the plants at a discounted rate.

A hot dog dinner hosted by the Heritage Foundation will be served up after the planting.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves, a gardening tool and friends and family to partake in the sowing.

"It's a great way to spend a couple of hours in a really pretty place," Stagnaro said. "I guarantee you'll enjoy the company, too."

The Annual Flower Planting Day at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds is Thursday, July 12, from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. The fairgrounds are located at 2601 East Lake Avenue, Watsonville. RSVPs are encouraged to ensure there is enough food for attendees. Please call (831) 742-5671.
