Rotarians Celebrate Raising $100,000 for New Classroom at Sanctuary Center

Some 200 people attended the opening gala at the Marine Sanctuary Center in Santa Cruz. Rotary raised $100,000 for a classroom that would help pass on ecological values to future generations.

The Santa Cruz and Sunrise Rotary Clubs were celebrated Saturday night at the first party thrown at the National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center in Santa Cruz in honor of the $100,000 they raised to build a classroom in the building.

"Rotary is known for doing things to help other countries," said Assistant Governor Jon Winston, of the Santa Cruz district. "We thought it was important to help out locally too."

Some 200 people, including the mayor, city council representatives, officials from NOAA and Rotary members from all over filled the classroom and bid on items including weeklong vacations, golf packages and a full-page ad in the Santa Cruz Sentinel that raised even more money.
