Teen Center hosts first 'CruzaPalooza' Sunday

Food, music, booths, skateboarding, carnival attractions and a James Durbin guitar are some of the highlights at Sunday's big event.

The Santa Cruz Teen Center at the Center will be hosting its first CruzaPalooza Fundraiser Sunday featuring skateboarding, a carnival, photo booths, crafts, a spaghetti dinner and music by the White Album Ensemble.

Former Santa Cruz Teen Center member and American Idol finalist James Durbin has contributed a special treat to by signing an Epiphone Les Paul guitar that will be raffled off at the event.

Since 2001 the Santa Cruz Teen Center has served as a safe haven helping about 3,500 teens.

“The Teen Center provides a place for teens to go where they are off the streets and around people that care about them,” said its supervisor, Robert Acosta.

The Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County, the Santa Cruz Police Department and a community programs grant, are all current supporters of the teen center.

In order to continue to be a positive outlet to the youth of Santa Cruz they need to raise money.

The teen center has seen its share of hard times. At one point the city council closed it because of a lack of funding. Fortunately, the center received a grant from the Packard Foundation, which gave it the push it needed to move to its current location.

However, that was only half the battle, the purpose of the fundraiser is to make enough money to insure the center can continue to grow and flourish.

“I’m anticipating that people get together and have a good time.” Acosta also said.

Adults can enjoy the sounds of live music by the members of the White Album Ensemble and surprise guests throughout the day. There will be skate ramps, photo booths arts and crafts and a gourmet spaghetti dinner provided by Zoccoli's at 5 p.m.
