Second Harvest Food Bank—the first food bank in California—came in second in a competition to be one of 500 charities to get a free truck from Toyota.

The Jewish Hospital and St. Mary's Foundation of Louisville, KY, won. The contest featured videos made by each charity and votes on Facebook for one day to determine the winner.

Our Lady of Peace serves about 1,800 young patients annually. A new Toyota will ensure our inpatients have a ride to and from medical specialists, dental appointments and community integration activities off the psych hospital's campus.

Additionally, reliable transportation for youths in outpatient programs will be available, ensuring they attend essential treatment programs even if their parents or guardians do not have a car. Having a new Toyota will be an asset for us in our dedication to serving the vulnerable children who need specialized psychiatric healthcare services. It would so meaningful to give our kids a reliable ride so they can, in turn, work toward a brighter future.

The car company's "100 Cars for Good" program is still giving away the cars daily, based on votes at Facebook.

Second Harvest, founded in 1972, has 3,000 volunteers and distributes 7.2 million pounds of food annually to those who need it, including working poor, children and seniors.

The voting took place last Thursday. You can get to the voting page via carsforgood.com.
