Historic Opportunity to Learn About Our New Railroad

The weekend of November 16-18 will be a big one for local history buffs and others excited about the County's acquisition of the Watsonville-to-Davenport rail line.

The weekend of November 16-18 will be a big one for local history buffs and others excited about the County's recent completion of its purchase of the 32-mile-long Watsonville-to-Davenport rail line.

On Friday evening, November 16, longtime local history scholar Sandy Lydon (a.k.a. "the history dude") will offer a free lecture on the history of the Santa Cruz Railroad, creator of much of the rail line just acquired by Santa Cruz County. The lecture will be given at Cabrillo College, where Mr. Lydon taught local history for so many years.

In following days, Mr. Lydon will lead another pair of SCR history-related events. On the 17th, the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission has planned a five-stop progressive "ribbon-cutting" celebration of the railroad acquisition. Those looking for a painless way to be present at all five stops can join Mr. Lydon on a bus that will follow the celebration from Watsonville to Davenport.

On Sunday the 18th, you can join Sandy for a "Hop on – Hop Off Bus Style Adventure" to explore "sexier" sections of the rail line. Be sure to wear your walking shoes for that one.

This blog recently posted a small note about the historic rail-corridor acquisition, and there's an earlier post about the Santa Cruz Railroad. But if you're really interested in the subject, go to one or more of these special events and hear about it from a real expert. I'll see you there.
