Golden State and Santa Cruz make roster moves

It was a busy day for both the Golden State Warriors and their Santa Cruz counterpart.  Earlier today, Mychel Thompson was added to the Santa Cruz training camp roster after a spot opened up when Oakland signed Dewayne Dedmon yesterday to an NBA contract.

After what Golden State Warriors head coach Mark Jackson described as an 'embarrassing effort' in Utah from his team's bench, Oakland assigned Dewayne Dedmon, Ognjen Kuzmic and Nemanja Nedovic to the Santa Cruz Warriors team before they open their own regular season Friday.  Here is how this affects the training camp roster.

A D-League team's roster is able to hold a maximum of 12 players.  No more than 10 of those players may be from the D-League itself.  Including any NBA players on assignment, a roster may grow to 12 players.  Since Golden State is currently sending three players to Oakland, this mean's Santa Cruz can only have nine active players on their team at one time to make-up for the additional player added.  Confusing, right?

This is different from the "affiliate rule" which allowed Golden State to assign Dewayne Dedmon, Seth Curry, and Joe Alexander to Santa Cruz after they were waived from their own training camp after they cleared league waivers.

This number does not include any players that are inactive due to injury.  Given the circumstances with Joe Alexander and Taylor Griffin, the Warriors may carry up to 14 players currently with those two listed as inactive.  Once they do become active, a player must be cut to make room for them on the roster.

Kent Bazemore was sent to Santa Cruz last year on assignment and was brought back to Golden State shortly thereafter several times last year.  While some may call this a demotion, it's really what the D-League is all about.

Nedovic, Kuzmic and Dedmon will all find quality minutes in Santa Cruz rather than sitting at the end of bench and not improving on their game.  Whether it's for a week, or a month, they are great additions to the Santa Cruz squad, and this will undoubtedly make coach Hill's roster cuts that much more difficult.
