Patch: Thanks for pointing out the unemployment rate tends to decline this time of year anyway dueRead More to "seasonal farm labor and tourism." And the reason its last drop was in November reflected temporary retail hires for the holiday season. Today's San Francisco Chronicle headlines provides another reason for the apparent drop: "Jobless rate dips - but many drop out." Or, those whose unemployment ran out or who simply gave up on looking for a job are no longer counted as unemployed. I think unemployment statistics also omit those graduating students unable to find work who haven't worked in the past and therefore technically cannot become unemployed. Figures lie and liars figure.

Very good to know indeed!

Sounds a good cause. Glad to see local foundations helping those in need.

Great information, Sheila! My son worked for the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and was veryRead More involved in trying to stop these predatory lending practices.

all the signs say tunnel open. its a network message. But it is strange to see it halfway throughRead More the tunnel. I think that the tunnel is amazing.

Do the math on these numbers...the percentages don't even add up. According to these numbers,Read More Aptos's unemployment rate is 5.1%, Capitola's is 7.4% and so on. And it's pretty hard to believe there are only 30 unemployed people in Soquel. So is the 12% true or another inflated number? And what do we do about the fact that the southeastern communities of Freedom and Watsonville have more than 50% of the county's unemployed? How popular is the topic that Measure J and other like practices meant to restrain growth are inherently racist and have caused the majority of kids born and raised in Santa Cruz County to leave, just so that they can build lives and own homes?

The Sentinel wrote about this same topic but also included the fact that the industries leading theRead More recovery were in the retail and restaurant sector. These two industries are notorious for being low wage and often times seasonal jobs. Not exactly helpful in our overly priced Central Coast Region.

The large sports might bring in more people to watch but they spend way more...only a handful ofRead More team make any money at all...and most of those sports don't graduate athletes at all...it's ajoke.

Jeffrey, Actually, we (the federal government) pay for particle accelerators...with some left over.Read More Universities NEVER get the short end of the funding stick when it deals with DARPA, NIH, etc. In fact, sometimes universities become piggish (e.g., Stanford in the mid-1990's). I agree, if you do not search for the truth...you are a pawn of some factor or person. We need fewer pawns...

Green Flash: All of your statements make sense to me, and I fundamentally agree. Unfortunately,Read More the incursion of ANY industry into the University marketplace has a way of corrupting it in proportion to the financial size of the outside presence. This is not to renounce such things; it is merely a plea to scrutinize them in proportion to their influence. Athletes are not asked to finance the particle accelerator; why should physicists be made to finance the gridiron? The University was born of communities of cloistered priests and monks. Its interface with the world will always be a thing with contradictions and complexities that defy simple solutions. BUT, anyone who succumbs to the pressure NOT to look behind the wizard's curtain is not only denying himself the indulgence of a universal human impulse; he is also BETRAYING HIS OWN INTEGRITY.

Rupert is a great guy and his parties are always a lot of fun!! He did find his wife Marie throughRead More networking and has always said that it isn't your friends you will end up dating, but your friends friends!! And to think I missed the chance to meet up with him tonight!! I had a basketball game for my son Rupert, but we'll catch up soon!!
Redwoodgirl March 13, 2013 at 11:47 am
Great article! I have yet to meet this guy, but now I sure want to!! Those parties sound awesome!!!
Karen Kefauver March 12, 2013 at 12:06 pm

$150,000 more dollars out of the pockets of minimum wage earners who work downtown, and anotherRead More deterrent for shoppers. Great.

Please don't underpay your child are providers. $13/ hr is wayyyy too low. $18-20/ hr is appropriateRead More and market rate for the Bay Area. You get what you pay for, and children deserve educated, skilled early care providers. They are out there! But they will not work for you for such low pay. This article is clearly an ad for sittercity and care.com. Their calculators are ridiculously low for a reason... Don't be fooled. Be cool.

Good! All petroleum products should be expensive. Oil is a finite resource that is rapidlyRead More depleting.
Justice Gold January 28, 2013 at 03:56 am
I think the word you were looking for was "horde", not hord, Mr. Bulluionio. Perhaps youRead More might consider a spelling course along with some anti-racism classes. I hear they have a great educational system in Mexico, perhaps a trip down South is in order?
Chris Jordan January 27, 2013 at 03:10 pm
Small world. Thanks D. Watsonville is not the whole world either (although - maybe Mikes). U.S.Read More draws many from other countries who have stronger currency and are not 16 trillion in debt. As mentioned - we have more tolerable weather without floods, hurricanes, snow, etc., And without tin-star tyrants ordering us how to live and running things like 2 year olds having temper tantrums.
Betsy January 26, 2013 at 08:53 pm
Thank you D. You spoke for quite a good number of us folks, who upon hearing his comments ....couldRead More not believe this beautiful town can still hold and in some unassuming capacity still embrace such type of garbage!. I hope my 1/2 ' brown' son will never have to cook a meal for him. He is attending culinary school at cabrillo college and loves the people in Gorgeous, kind and loving SC...
