There's a disconnect between the data collected by state and federal agencies and the self-reportedRead More information submitted to Newsweek, US News, et al. The state reported data shows that PCS has a graduation rate of just 90%, the second lowest in the county, between Watsonville High and Pajaro Valley High. Even more telling, the graduation rate for socio-economically disadvantaged students is just 77.8%. PCS fails to advance nearly a third of its poor kids.

"Free shopping starts Saturday"? Which Saturday? I'm reading this on a Saturday (AprilRead More 13th). Is it today? An actual date would be helpful.

Thank you so much Helbard for donating to our local students in need so they can have a nice promRead More memory! Tony Madrigal
Uncle Frenchfrie April 10, 2013 at 05:32 pm
It was probably left out because it is not a public school like the rest listed in the article. YouRead More need to win a lottery or have a sibling already going there to attend.
Bea April 10, 2013 at 11:12 am
This story and graph left out Pacific Collegiate Charter High School. With a graduation rate of justRead More 90% and a dropout rate over 7%, it is the second lowest scoring school in the county; just behind PV High and just ahead of Watsonville High.

The peer to peer surveys will happen in the month of May. Results will be released at the end ofRead More May, early June at the latest.

This is absolutely the direction we should be moving in! Santa Cruz is on the forefront ofRead More solutions!
Lisa April 30, 2013 at 08:18 pm
This is just way too cool!
Shirley Christmore Stroh April 25, 2013 at 04:50 pm
What a joke!!! You let almost 2000 idiots smoke pot and have police protection, then you arrestRead More someone with a LARGE joint? Santa Cruz is really showing how smart they are! NOT!!! A town lost to morons!
Jack Kramer April 23, 2013 at 01:48 pm
What a bunch of shit heads! They weren't saying "fuck the police" when they were worriedRead More about a rapist on campus!
Denise April 22, 2013 at 02:15 pm
I was wondering what the project was? It was for science, so it's definitely not out of the questionRead More that it was legitimate.
Cathy P. April 20, 2013 at 07:13 pm
Who wraps a class project in electrical tape? Was this possibly an attempt to make something lookRead More suspicious? Considering what the top news story is right now, you'd think a person would be a little more careful. Jeez (shaking my head).
Denise April 19, 2013 at 01:12 pm
Copycat's thinking this is fun and games. Prosecute to the fullest! Make an example.

12:42 pm on Thursday, April 18, 2013 Find the person who disrupted all of these livesRead More today…and put him/her in jail and leave them there as the action was a terrorist act…terrorizing the community is not acceptable and should not be tolerated.
Gary Bloom April 12, 2013 at 12:27 pm
This report is completely inaccurate. For example, Harbor High School has about 175 computers thatRead More are used by students on a daily basis.
Jessica King April 22, 2013 at 01:52 am
@Matt. let's keep some facts straight. " it allows the reader to assume the sex occurred inRead More her dorm room, which is the most likely case. Also, if this is a case of self-mortification, then why claim rape at all? She knew she wasn't raped" She was visiting the UCSC campus, she did not attend, therefore she didn't have a dorm room.
Shelby Lee April 4, 2013 at 03:38 pm
None of us know her state of mind, intentions, future plans, etc. However, any "man"Read More that answers an Ad to physically abuse a female in exchange for Sex, is questionable. But, for him to actually meet this very small, young girl (who looks 13!), and follow through with violently beating her, getting aroused, having sex... is SICK & DEPRAVED!! To Catch a Predator! XXX **If she was your daughter, you'd feel very different about this Sicko!
bob_dolle April 2, 2013 at 12:57 am
exactly. why is she only getting 6 months? she went out of her way to lie and attempt to ruin anRead More innocent person's life. he would have gotten 20 years if she was successful. instead she barely gets a tiny slap on the wrist. this is disgraceful. so much for equality...
Active Thinker April 3, 2013 at 11:04 pm
The large sports might bring in more people to watch but they spend way more...only a handful ofRead More team make any money at all...and most of those sports don't graduate athletes at all...it's ajoke.

Jeffrey, Actually, we (the federal government) pay for particle accelerators...with some left over.Read More Universities NEVER get the short end of the funding stick when it deals with DARPA, NIH, etc. In fact, sometimes universities become piggish (e.g., Stanford in the mid-1990's). I agree, if you do not search for the truth...you are a pawn of some factor or person. We need fewer pawns...
Jeffrey Bottaro April 1, 2013 at 08:09 pm
Green Flash: All of your statements make sense to me, and I fundamentally agree. Unfortunately,Read More the incursion of ANY industry into the University marketplace has a way of corrupting it in proportion to the financial size of the outside presence. This is not to renounce such things; it is merely a plea to scrutinize them in proportion to their influence. Athletes are not asked to finance the particle accelerator; why should physicists be made to finance the gridiron? The University was born of communities of cloistered priests and monks. Its interface with the world will always be a thing with contradictions and complexities that defy simple solutions. BUT, anyone who succumbs to the pressure NOT to look behind the wizard's curtain is not only denying himself the indulgence of a universal human impulse; he is also BETRAYING HIS OWN INTEGRITY.
MichaelHopek March 22, 2013 at 02:23 pm
What if she was raped and the University didn't want the bad publicity so they and the cops told herRead More to say it was a hoax? In the history of the world, police try to cover up incidences that make the city, county, and in this case, UCSC look bad.

Shout out to the investigators who got to the bottom of her perverse 'wierd sex' menatility beforeRead More life long damages were wrongfully charged to who knows which man she may have wanted to target. She belongs in a mental institution.
The One March 21, 2013 at 06:33 pm
People who file false rape claims get a slap on the wrist, whose those wrongfully convicted sit inRead More prison for years! It is obvious the feminist controlled courts is a major part of the problem.

Smaller classes do make a difference. I teach physical education and health, and believe me, when IRead More take 43 students inside for a classroom lesson it is incredibly challenging. From just pure logistics (enough desks and do they fit?), to behavior issues, to differentiating the lesson (I have all levels) - it is a whirlwind and I am always left worrying that I did not give someone what they needed to succeed. The smallest class I have taught was 23 students - and what heaven that was! You see results right away, because you have time to spend with individual students and help the with their needs. It is not difficult to understand, smaller classes make a better learning environment.
LeAnn Copriviza March 20, 2013 at 12:52 pm
Looks like a typo. I read that as "teacher to student".
Dave Kumec March 20, 2013 at 11:43 am
What does "pupil-to-student ratios" mean?

Chester Fonebone February 28, 2013 at 03:49 pm
From a military perspective, where rapes are as common an act of war as shooting someone, whatRead More usually happens at the higher eschelons of power and control is that when a punishment rape is ordered a second sexual act by another party is ordered simultaneously to cover up the actual rape incase anything is reported. The investigating party will reach a dead end with the fake rape and dismiss the investigation assuming the report was a misinterpretation. Meanwhile the actual hostage under threat of death is silently whisked away with her captors.

I see I have no response. And I'll bet the majority of people would respond "ofRead More course"..... Sorry folks, to the first airport in Oregon ( Medford,35 miles over the Northern border) , and flight time to San Diego (Southern border) from SF are nearly identical. WTH! Congratulations Bay Area...you are in Central California....Teachers need to teach and be allowed to do so.
