No, you don't have to be "wealthy" to live on the central coast. I work a fairly average…Read More income job and am able to afford it. This is not a cheap area to live in though. If you can't afford it, move to some place more affordable like the central valley or out of state. It shouldn't be up to everyone else to subsidize your coastal lifestyle - that is a luxury, like driving a brand new car or owning a large TV (some of us give up TV's and cars just to live here rather than beg for help). Now if you can't even afford reasonable accommodation in a more affordable city, then perhaps help is needed.

Are you saying only the wealthy should be able to live on the central coast?

Mixed feelings here. I worked incredibly hard over a number of years to afford to buy what was at…Read More the time one of the county's cheapest homes (not "affordable housing" though). And then other folks just get to walk up and get a handout. This is an expensive area. Living on the central coast is a luxury, not a right. I mean what's next, you gonna build section 8 homes in Pebble Beach?

Kate,
This is an article about honoring those who do step up to the plate and make a difference and…Read More not the 'horrow" ( I suspect you mean horrors) or foster care.
There are many many excellent foster parents and advocates that have nothing but love and support for these children. As with all walks of life there are bad elements, but the system does what it can to weed them out. It is also with the help of people like Wendy and other CASA volunteers ( all of whom this article was meant to honor) that these abuses within the system get caught and corrected. it is these people who look out for the children and give them a voice, while helping to make the system a safer place.
I know this because, I too, am a CASA volunteer. Because of this organization my kiddo, a 15 yo girl, is in a good home and is flourishing! So, instead of turning this into a story of "beasts" and turning it into something negative, let's keep it what it is a story to honor those who make a difference and do so because they are passionate, love kids, and want to make their world a better place to live!
Kuddos to Wendy, the others that were honored, and all involved in CASA, they really make the world a better place!

That is most of what Rotary does. They did something unusual with this one.

The new interpretive center is nice. Of course, it'll be under water, along with everything below…Read More Beach Hill, about 25 years from now. I'd be more impressed if the Rotarians raised money to help shelter homeless people, helping them cope with abject poverty, as we are doing in the progressive churches.

Over 20 years ago, when first learning at a Rotary Club meeting that CASA was being established in…Read More SC County, I made the decision to make it my all-time favorite organization to support. I can't say it any better than Cathy says in this article.
