Pedestrian, 49, Struck, Killed Crossing Mission St. Thursday Night in Santa Cruz

The cause of the collision is under investigation. The accident roadway was closed for four hours.

A Santa Cruz man, 49, was fatally struck by a car as he crossed Mission Street near King Street Thursday night, police said.

The victim's name was not released by the Santa Cruz Police Department.

Police said the pedestrian was struck at about 10:14 p.m. on the 2400 block of Mission, in the northbound lane near the King intersection.

The man was transported to Dominican Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after his arrival, police said.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured and cooperated with investigators, police said.

Several witnesses in the area reported that the pedestrian had left an alcohol outlet near the intersection and was struck while crossing Mission, police said, adding that it appeared the pedestrian was in the crosswalk at the time of the collision, but the investigation is still in preliminary stages.

No charges were filed and no arrests were made, police said.

The exact cause of the collision is unknown at this time.

Mission (SR1), between Fair Avenue and Swift Street, was closed for approximately four hours.
